National Day of the American Cowboy

The American Cowboy is a national icon, well represented and celebrated in movies, television, and sporting events such as rodeos, and more.

Senator Craig Thomas of Wyoming introduced a resolution  designate July 23rd, 2005 as “National Day of the American Cowboy.”  The resolution spells out what it is to be an American Cowboy, the pioneering men and women who helped establish the American West, describing them as icons that embody “honesty, integrity, courage, compassion, respect, a strong work ethic, and patriotism”.  Cowboys are not only a significant part of our country’s history and culture, but are an important aspect of our current economy.

The Senate passed the resolution on May 12th and encouraged Americans to observe the special day with appropriate ceremonies and activities to honor our American Cowboys of the past, present and future.  The resolution was again passed in 2006 and 2007, and is currently waiting passage for 2008. (The resolution will have to be reintroduced each year until it is officially designated a national day of observance by the President.)

It is hoped that the 4th Saturday of July will soon be named a permanent celebration on the national calendar. In the meantime promotion celebrations are celebrated across the country. It is hoped that by sharing the history, art work & celebrations it will educate the public & help to preserve and protect the American Cowboy Heritage.
