Tule Ranch &
Cogdell Family
Recipient of the 2006 AQHA Best Remuda Award

The Tule Ranch is a family owned Texas ranch that has spent the past 50 years breeding good quarter horses with cow sense.

Billy Cogdell taught his four children, Penny, Billy Rank, Dick, and Jim to be especially particular on what they keep to breed, in an effort to raise horses with a good disposition, good conformation, and lots of cow.

The origination of the Cogdell remuda began in 1951 when D.M. Cogdell, Sr. purchased 10 yearling fillies and 1 yearling stallion from the King Ranch. The stallion, named Solis Cogdell after he was purchased, was by Wimpy P-1. Later that same year, another stallion by Pretty Buck, named Peppy Buck, was purchased. Also in 1951, another yearling filly who was a daughter of King P-234, named Lesa Maria, was added to the Cogdell remuda. These mares and stallions were the beginning of the Cogdell breeding program.

The next phase of the breeding program was the purchase of such studs as Double Vandy by Double Bid, followed later by Maxi Lena by Doc O'Lena, Lance Jones by Pa Jones, and Peppys Boy 895 by Vibrant Peppy. Billy used these studs to improve his foundation remuda's bloodline. In more recent years, in order to further enhance the breeding program, outside stallion breeding services and the purchase of some outside mares have produced the horses they are now raising.

Horses raised on the Tule Ranch are by no means pampered. The colts are born in the pasture and aren't babied in any way. They are weaned and halter broke; then, at two years old, they are broke to ride. The ones showing the most potential are trained at home or sent to cutting horse trainers to be trained and shown. Using strict selection and the horse sense they have developed over many years has helped the Cogdells breed the good horses they have today.

The AQHA BEST Remuda Award began in 1992 and has since recognized several outstanding ranches for their efforts in raising American Quarter Horses, an important tool of their trade. It is to honor the contributions that ranch horses have made to the heritage of the American Quarter Horse. It is sponsored by American Quarter Horse Association and Bayer Animal

The Award will be presented to Tule Ranch & Cogdell family November the 11th during the WRCA Working Ranch Rodeo finals in at Amarillo TX.
