She was picked up as "compensation" in a horse-deal-gone-sour for a member of my family. She didn't come with papers, but she's obviously got some breeding, somewhere. She's about 15hh by my guestimate. Approx. 7 years old. She's really really gentle, but doesn't know much. I don't *know* that she's broke to ride, but story goes they had a 7 y.o. kid on her (bareback in a halter and he just let her walk around).

Anyway, I'm contemplating trying to trade my brother my big dapple gelding for her and about $500. I'll admit, up front, I **love** buckskins...and big, stout horses...and baby faces.... LOL Startin' to wonder if I'm just seein' yella. ;) (Oh, and she's turnin' away from my dad in that one shot, her knee's bent, not crooked legged.)

hmmm, honest opinion?

well she's not at all my type of horse... I do happen to think buckskin's a decent enough color but really that's all she's got going for her, IMO.

Stout? she just looks fat to me. She has no muscle definition she's long backed, downhill, high on the hocks, the neckset looks a bit funky and even considering there's not a decent shot of her neck, I suspect she's quite a bit thick there too since it looks like it just comes off her huge chest with no definition. Her hip's long enough I guess....might be decent on a better made horse but with the rest of the faults stacked up against her she's gonna have a heck of a time drawing up underself to be really useful....plus with no idea of training?....Honestly I probably wouldn't give $100 for her much less trade a horse and $500.

I have to agree with Cajun... What are you wanting her for? If it is just a pleasure/trail horse and you get along with her then really that is all that matters. But I do think in this market that is ay to much money IMO

heh.... Well, for starters, *I* can't write anymore, apparently. The trade I'm thinkin' about is my big, fat gelding for her plus $500 (from my bro). In my market, as she stands, she's worth about $400. Given time and the right buyer, I can get $6-800 for her...more w/ more work. My brother, technically, has $750 in her. If I was to sell my gelding, right now, I'd put a $1500 price on him (and he's not worth it...LOL...he's fat, lazy and 1/4 draft...but he's the same...all the time...and big enough to carry my brother.)

What I want her for? Well...not 100% sure on that. A project, a challenge. Might consider raisig a colt out of her, to see what she throws....or a mule or two. I just like her. I don't usually go silly about horses, even just cuz they're "pretty." I don't know exactly what it is I like about her, but there's somethin' there. Was hopin' maybe someone else saw it. LOL

As far as her conformation, I really don't dislike it that much. She's not a stock-type quarterhorse, no. She moves out pretty nice. She is thick necked, but thick necks are pretty common in the Navajo "mustangs." Annie and Paco are both thick necked...built a lot like her....and they're good horses. It's just their type. Annie is also a -N branded horse. Paco's not branded -N, but I know where he came from...he may as well be.

Would you still like her if she was a solid sorrel? Personally she's not my style, but if you like her go for it!

Yeh, I'd still like her if she was pink w/ purple polk-a-dots. She's a solid, gentle, easy-goin', nice-movin', well-minded mare.

Exactly! I know I've got some here that most people wouldn't have given a second glance & they've turned out to be awesome horses.

hehe.... That's why there are so many different kinds of horses out there, I reckon. :)

Well, for whatever reason, I traded my brother for her, today. He's happy. I'm happy. My husband thinks we're both crazy and that I screwed my brother. LOL We've owned Merlin about 5 years, now, and probably ridden him as many times. **rolls eyes** I've got $500 cash-or-trade comin' from my bro, whenever, on top of the mare. He's got a horse gentle enough for his wife and kids and big enough for him to ride. (My bro's 6'2", 260#)

Best part is, we still have access to Merlin, should we ever need it.

He's the big dapple grey in that pic I posted on the July challenge.

Now to come up w/a name for her!

I went with "Butter." LOL

Original, huh? We'll blame my hubby, he came up with it.

If I keep her, I'm gonna try to get her registered American Indian Horse. Call her "JB Honey Butter" or "JB Creamy Butter".... LOL I contemplated "Manteguilla"...Navajo for "butter" (Spanish for butter is Mantequilla).

I dunno. Hopin' to have time to get her out and get her saddled tomorrow. Wish me luck!

She likes the Navajo or Spanish form of her name better! (I have a tendency to believe horses name themselves, ask Lmac!) All kidding aside, given her background I think the mustang in her deserves an unusual name.

"Mantequilla Dulce" = Sweet Butter

She's"Butter," tho. Fits her. "Butter Baby." lol'

Got her saddled up today, no problems. Trotted around. Got on, she said, "Huh?" LOL No go, no rein, no nothin'. Let her walk and she went straight to the barn. Okie dokie then. Hubby led me on her for a bit, then we called a guy we know. He came over, worked with her for 30 minutes and had her giving and suppling and bein' just great. Was awesome! He's gonna ride her a few more times for me and "teach me." I'm great w/ a horse that knows teh basics, not so good at teachin' 'em the basics. Sure was nice to watch him work!

Forgot to get pics of her saddled. SHe looks good. SHe moves good, too. Plants those pivot feet, moves around herself. Nice.

That little mare looks tough as hell and will probably go all day and be a "do all" horse once you get her trained. Look at the foot and bone on her.
I have always been a Quarter Horse person myself, but a good horse is a good horse no matter it's breed or breeding.
I wish you luck with your little mare. Please keep us posted on her progress!

Thanks!

I just went and moved her. Played w/ her on the ground a little. She hasn't forgotten what she learned, yesterday.

I used up my morning playtime...aka Aubree naptime...shootin' the bull w/ my best bud. We don't get enough time to do that.
