I was just wondering what people thought made good bits for kids with bad hands. I have a cousin who is seven and she keeps her horse at our place. shes not the most coordinated and she sometimes bups and pulls when she shouldnt the horse kind of learns to keep his head where she cant get a hold of it because she has a hard time keeping her reins gathered up when she goes faster like running barrels. we work on all those things but I was just wondering if there was something that would be a liitle more forgiving but still have enough bi there when she needs it.

There are some that have elastic on the ends so there is a give for the horse even with kids hands. If I can remember the name or find them I will tell you what they are.

Kids shouldnt compete until they can ride properly and safely.

I let them use a bosal and put regular reins on it, I can adjust it underneat to suit the horse and kid.  All my horses are broke with a bosal so they know it's back to basics.  People used to think I was crazy for running barrels on my pleasure horse in a bosal, but I can ask for a lot and they are very forgiving if used correctly.

I used to team pen in one too, people used to ask me all the time how I got my horse to stop with it.

I use mechanical hackamores (soft nose bands, not bicycle chain) w/ loose-ish chin straps for my kids.

Of course, my kids horse has two gears...slow and whoa...when a kid is on her. Let someone who can ride on and she steps up and goes.
